Android 17 Expands Wireless iPhone Data Transfers, MacRumors Reports

According to MacRumors, Android 17 includes an updated migration feature that allows users to transfer additional data types wirelessly from an iPhone during initial device setup.

MacRumors reported that the upgraded setup process allows users to move Google Accounts, saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and eSIMs directly from an iPhone. The migration tool also retains support for data categories available in prior releases, including photos, videos, contacts, text messages, and calendar entries.

Device transfers utilizing the updated wireless method require a source iPhone running iOS 26.3 or later.

Regulatory Context and System Functionality

Both Apple and Google implemented built-in data transfer tools that function without requiring a standalone app as part of requirements introduced under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), MacRumors reported. The legislation mandates operating system data portability to prevent platform lock-in and simplify switching between mobile platforms.

The DMA regulations previously required both companies to deploy a simplified cross-platform eSIM transfer process.

Rollout and Hardware Support

According to MacRumors, the updated transfer tool in Android 17 has been rolling out to select Pixel smartphones since June.

The feature is also set to arrive on newly announced hardware, including Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 smartphones.
