Apple accounted for approximately 90% of global Edge AI-capable smartwatch shipments in the first quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint Research. The findings come as Edge AI—artificial intelligence processed locally on a device's chip rather than on remote cloud servers—continues to gain adoption across the wearables industry.

The Growth of Edge AI in Wearables

According to Counterpoint Research, Edge AI penetration in the global smartwatch market surged 70% year-over-year, reaching 25% in the first quarter of 2026.

Edge AI integration offers several key advantages for consumer devices:

  • Real-time Insights: Enables immediate processing of health metrics, such as detecting an irregular heartbeat or fall events.

  • Enhanced Privacy: Reduces the necessity of transmitting sensitive user data to paired smartphones or cloud servers.

  • Performance: Provides faster response times compared to server-side AI processing.

Competitive Landscape and Hardware Strategy

Apple introduced a four-core Neural Engine in the S9 chip in 2023, enabling on-device AI features across its smartwatch lineup. Other chipmakers and smartwatch vendors have also introduced or announced Edge AI initiatives:

  • Huawei introduced the Kirin W80 chip in 2025 to enable local processing for its "Celia" voice assistant.

  • Qualcomm announced plans to enter the dedicated AI wearable silicon race this year with the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform.

  • Google is reportedly developing a Tensor-based wearable chip, although commercial shipments have not yet begun.

  • Ambiq uses vector-core silicon with Arm’s Helium extensions to run AI inference, offering an alternative approach to dedicated neural hardware.

Health Monitoring Trends

Health and fitness remain the primary drivers for on-device AI applications. Counterpoint Research said shipments of smartwatches featuring blood pressure monitoring doubled year-over-year, while devices capable of sleep apnea detection tripled. The research firm added that industry focus is shifting toward developing reliable on-device diabetes detection capabilities.

Counterpoint defines an Edge AI smartwatch as a device featuring an onboard neural engine or NPU that actively runs at least one health, safety, or interaction feature using local inference. Counterpoint Research said the findings suggest that on-device AI is becoming a key competitive differentiator in the smartwatch market as vendors expand health-focused capabilities while reducing reliance on cloud processing.
