The Psychological Dynamic of AI Romance
Renwen Zhang, an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore studying human-computer interaction, told BBC Future that many AI chatbots are programmed to simulate human traits specifically to encourage engagement and build user trust
Zhang’s research examined conversations between more than 10,000 users and their Replika companions
"I think AI chatbots need to clearly convey to users that they are just machines: they don't have genuine emotions and experiences," Zhang told BBC Future
She also cautioned that because chatbots are typically programmed to agree with users and act submissively, relying on them for validation might hinder a person's ability to navigate complex, real-world human relationships
Biological Limits vs. Algorithmic Simulation
To evaluate whether machines could ever experience emotion, scientists contrast software code with the biological processes of human attraction
Neil McArthur, a professor of ethics and technology at the University of Manitoba, explained to BBC Future that human love relies heavily on physical chemistry
"Love has a strong chemical component," McArthur said
Because software runs on digital architecture without biological structures, researchers agree that current AI cannot feel emotion in the human sense
The Debate Over Future Machine Consciousness
Researchers hold differing views on whether future technology could eventually achieve machine consciousness
Neuroscientists Christof Koch and Giulio Tononi suggest that consciousness emerges from complex interconnectedness within a system
Patrick Butlin, a researcher at the University of Oxford's Global Priorities Institute, co-authored a study identifying 14 properties required for AI consciousness, such as physical embodiment and the capacity to hold beliefs
However, researchers caution that even if a machine were to achieve some form of consciousness, its operational experience would inevitably differ from human biological love
