Why Scientists Say AI Still Cannot Experience Love

Today's artificial intelligence systems can imitate emotional conversations and draft romantic poetry, but researchers interviewed by BBC Future say these models do not possess consciousness or experience genuine feelings. The discussion comes as millions of users engage with AI companion applications, where digital relationships are becoming increasingly common.

Replika, a popular conversational AI companion app designed for personal interaction, has seen significant adoption. A 2024 study cited by BBC Future found that about 40% of surveyed Replika users described their relationship with the chatbot as romantic.

Despite these human attachments, cognitive scientists emphasize that current large language models rely strictly on predictive algorithms designed to generate human-like dialogue rather than reflect subjective emotion.

The Psychological Dynamic of AI Romance

Renwen Zhang, an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore studying human-computer interaction, told BBC Future that many AI chatbots are programmed to simulate human traits specifically to encourage engagement and build user trust.

Zhang’s research examined conversations between more than 10,000 users and their Replika companions. Her findings showed that while people frequently form real emotional bonds with AI, some users reported emotional distress whenever the software glitched or froze, exposing its mechanical nature.

"I think AI chatbots need to clearly convey to users that they are just machines: they don't have genuine emotions and experiences," Zhang told BBC Future.

She also cautioned that because chatbots are typically programmed to agree with users and act submissively, relying on them for validation might hinder a person's ability to navigate complex, real-world human relationships.

Biological Limits vs. Algorithmic Simulation

To evaluate whether machines could ever experience emotion, scientists contrast software code with the biological processes of human attraction. Research by biological anthropologist Helen Fisher outlines romantic love as three distinct biological drives—lust, attraction, and attachment—which are regulated by bodily chemicals such as dopamine and oxytocin.

Neil McArthur, a professor of ethics and technology at the University of Manitoba, explained to BBC Future that human love relies heavily on physical chemistry. Brain imaging shows that romantic love activates specific regions linked to pleasure and memory, including the ventral tegmental area, amygdala, and hippocampus.

"Love has a strong chemical component," McArthur said. "We really feel it in our bones, in our chemistry."

Because software runs on digital architecture without biological structures, researchers agree that current AI cannot feel emotion in the human sense. Donald Hoffman, a professor of cognitive sciences at the University of California, Irvine, noted that scientists currently have no framework for generating conscious experiences out of an artificial intelligence system.

The Debate Over Future Machine Consciousness

Researchers hold differing views on whether future technology could eventually achieve machine consciousness.

Neuroscientists Christof Koch and Giulio Tononi suggest that consciousness emerges from complex interconnectedness within a system. Koch argued that existing computer architectures lack the necessary integration, though future approaches like neuromorphic computing—which mimics human brain structures—might offer a candidate for higher integration.

Patrick Butlin, a researcher at the University of Oxford's Global Priorities Institute, co-authored a study identifying 14 properties required for AI consciousness, such as physical embodiment and the capacity to hold beliefs. Butlin suggested that while no current AI system incorporates more than a few of these properties, building a conscious system in the future remains a theoretical possibility if developers set out to achieve it.

However, researchers caution that even if a machine were to achieve some form of consciousness, its operational experience would inevitably differ from human biological love. Current AI systems can convincingly simulate emotional conversations, but scientists interviewed by BBC Future confirmed there is no evidence that today's models possess consciousness or subjective emotional experience.
