Everyday household items—ranging from microwave ovens to large fish tanks—can interfere with Wi-Fi performance, according to BBC Future. While physical obstructions like thick walls are well-known signal blockers, technical reporting suggests that specific household items can contribute to connectivity issues more than users typically anticipate.
Where Wi-Fi Problems Often Begin
Wireless networks broadcast data over radio waves using unlicensed frequency bands. BBC Future reports that the 2.4 GHz frequency—a standard for many Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices—is also utilized by microwave ovens to heat food.
Alex Hills, a pioneer in the development of early Wi-Fi networks at Carnegie Mellon University, categorizes these common disruptions as "Bad Boys". Interference patterns typically arise from the following sources:
Microwave Leakage: Older microwave units or those with degraded door seals may leak frequencies that clash with the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, which can degrade connection stability. Newer hardware operating on 5 GHz frequencies is generally less susceptible to this interference.
Water Absorption: Water can absorb some radio energy, which may weaken Wi-Fi signals when large water-filled objects block the path. For instance, fish tanks placed directly in the signal path between a router and a wireless device can create connectivity dead zones.
Dense Construction Materials: Radio signals generally weaken less when passing through wood or drywall than through denser materials like brick or concrete. Dense construction materials force signals to dissipate or bounce, which can significantly weaken connectivity at the receiving device.
Simple Ways to Improve Coverage
General home networking guidance recommends several adjustments to minimize environmental interference and maintain signal consistency:
Elevated Central Positioning: Placing a router in a central, elevated location within a home typically assists in more uniform signal distribution.
Managing Signal Paths: Reducing major physical obstructions between the router and connected devices helps maintain stability. A clearer line-of-sight path generally yields more reliable performance.
Deploying Mesh Systems: For larger properties or complex floor plans, mesh network systems may offer more reliable coverage. By utilizing a series of small, interconnected nodes to distribute the signal, these systems often provide more consistent connectivity than a single standard router, depending on the property's size and layout.
In most homes, improving router placement and reducing physical barriers can solve many common Wi-Fi problems before users need new hardware.
