Google Expands Android Migration Tool With Password and eSIM Transfer

Google has updated its Android migration tool to support direct transfers of saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, Google Account data, and eSIM profiles from iPhones, Neowin reported. The update expands on the utility's previous transfer options, which covered photos, videos, contacts, text messages, and calendar entries.

The expanded feature is rolling out to select Google Pixel devices and comes included on Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 foldables. Neowin noted that support for additional Android devices is expected to expand, though official launch dates have not been announced.

Migration Setup

The setup process requires both the new Android phone and the source iPhone to be turned on and fully charged. During initial setup, users choose the option to set up using an iPhone.

Scanning a QR code displayed on the Android screen with the iPhone camera pairs the two devices. Users can then select which specific data categories to transfer while keeping both phones side by side until the process completes.

eSIM and Messenger Transfer Options

Following the initial data transfer, the tool prompts users to move their eSIM to the Android device. Neowin reported that if an iPhone's eSIM cannot be transferred directly due to hardware or carrier limitations, users can download a new eSIM or use a physical SIM card. Actual transfer availability depends on device and carrier compatibility.

Once the primary transfer finishes and the Android phone boots up, a separate prompt guides users through transferring WhatsApp message histories. Google maintains a complete list of supported devices and carrier requirements in its official support documentation.

Google has not announced official rollout dates for other phone manufacturers.
