Samsung Establishes Robotics Division, Names Former Hyundai Executive to Lead Strategy

Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday it will establish a robotics division reporting directly to the chief executive to accelerate robotics development and commercialisation. Samsung said the move is intended to establish robotics as a growth engine.

According to the company, the new RX, or "Robotics eXperience," division will oversee its mid-to-long-term robotics strategy, core technology development, and business execution, while expanding research capabilities at home and overseas.

Executive Vice President Lee Dongkun will head the Robotics Strategy Team, the company announced. Lee previously led robotics strategy at Hyundai Motor Group, including work related to Boston Dynamics.

The statement added that Samsung plans to establish robotics research hubs in the U.S., China, and Japan, where robotics technology is advancing rapidly, to strengthen competitiveness by leveraging local ecosystems and expertise.

The announcement follows a series of robotics initiatives by Samsung this year. During its January earnings conference call, the company stated that it aimed to achieve tangible results in its humanoid robotics business this year. In April, the corporate statement indicated it would consider investments and acquisitions where necessary to accelerate development and commercialisation, while partnering with local companies for technology development.

Reuters reported that Samsung said advances in technologies such as physical AI are making robotics businesses increasingly viable. The company said it plans to develop humanoid robots for manufacturing sites before expanding them to home and retail applications, with the goal of improving productivity and user experience.
