X Rebuilds Android App From Scratch After Nearly a Year of Development

X has released a rebuilt version of its Android app following a development effort lasting nearly a year. According to X head of product Nikita Bier, the application was developed from scratch. Bier said the project was one of the company's largest engineering efforts.

Performance Improvements

X said the previous Android app had not maintained feature parity with its iOS counterpart, at times struggling to load posts when users clicked external links. The update is designed to improve loading speeds, scrolling performance, and notification reliability.

Bier described the rebuilt app as faster and smoother. He added that the new architecture is designed to support quicker feature rollouts. Bier noted that the company assembled a dedicated Android team last August, followed by one of the platform's largest weeks for Android downloads in October.

What's Next

The refreshed app is now available via the Google Play Store, though Bier warned that several performance adjustments and features are still underway. Engineers are working to optimize performance on older Android devices and add support for Spaces, X’s live audio feature. Additional capabilities—including a new video editor, a react-with-video function, cashtags, and custom timelines—are planned for future updates.
