Cloudflare says non-human traffic has already overtaken human traffic in its measurements, and the company now believes automated activity could become as much as 1,000 times larger than human-generated traffic within five years if current trends continue. The projection is not a measure of the number of people online, nor is it a guarantee: it is a conditional forecast about traffic volume from a company whose network sits at the center of the growing AI-agent economy.

The prediction came during Cloudflare’s second-quarter earnings call, where the company said its earlier expectation that automated traffic would pass human traffic in 2027 had been overtaken by events. Its underlying observation still matters. If automated traffic keeps rising, the internet will need better ways to verify agents, limit abusive requests, manage costs and preserve a workable relationship between content publishers and the systems that consume their material.

The most important development will not be whether a single 1,000x estimate proves exact. It will be whether web infrastructure and standards can make automated traffic more identifiable and accountable.
