Microsoft to Optimize Windows 11 RAM Usage for 8GB PCs

Microsoft says Windows 11 is being optimized to reduce idle RAM usage on 8GB PCs, where background processes can consume a substantial amount of available memory before users launch their first application.

The initiative, announced by Microsoft Windows and Devices President Pavan Davuluri, expands on a broader quality commitment introduced earlier this year. According to official communications reported by Notebookcheck, the changes address user feedback regarding baseline resource usage on lower-memory configurations.

For everyday users on affected 8GB devices, these updates aim to keep the system responsive when launching web browsers or productivity tools by reducing memory reserved by background processes where possible.

Technical Adjustments and Background Memory Behavior

Under the planned updates, Microsoft aims to improve overall system responsiveness by targeting baseline resource consumption across system processes and built-in components.

A key focus involves optimizing WebView2—a web-based engine that powers several built-in apps in the background—and tuning WinUI 3, Microsoft's modern interface framework used by native Windows apps, so system tools reserve less memory. Notebookcheck reported that certain 8GB systems can use around 6GB of RAM while idle, depending on background workload and configuration.

According to technical analysis from PCWorld, engineers have begun migrating specific interface elements, such as File Explorer's Properties dialog, to lighter frameworks. Microsoft is also adopting more flexible memory allocation mechanisms to allow active applications to reclaim reserved memory when needed.

Hardware Context and Planned Rollout

According to technical reporting by Notebookcheck and PCWorld, the prevalence of soldered laptop designs means many laptops with soldered memory cannot be modified after purchase. Consequently, devices with 8GB of RAM can experience memory pressure during routine multitasking, increasing the importance of software-level optimizations for affected systems.

Microsoft indicated that optimizations will roll out incrementally through Windows Insider preview builds, with broader system improvements planned to continue shipping through future stable releases. The company noted in its official guidance that systems with larger RAM capacities are expected to continue delivering better overall performance for resource-intensive workloads.
