NASA Cancels Swift Telescope Rescue: LINK Spacecraft Fails Orbit Boost

NASA awarded Katalyst a $30 million contract to raise the orbit of a 21-year-old observatory. The spacecraft reached orbit, then lost the ability to point itself precisely enough to attempt the capture.

NASA sent a spacecraft to catch a falling telescope. Weeks after launch, the spacecraft started to spin.

On Wednesday, August 19, NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies announced that the LINK spacecraft will not capture or boost the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. NASA's stated reason is "an ongoing commercial spacecraft attitude control issue."

Swift, which has observed the universe's most powerful explosions since 2004, is expected to reenter Earth's atmosphere later this year, according to NASA.

 Why This Matters

Swift is not the only NASA observatory losing altitude. NASA has attributed Swift's accelerated decay to increased solar activity expanding the upper atmosphere, which raises drag on objects in low Earth orbit.

The Associated Press reported that Hubble had been considered as a possible follow-on target if the Swift demonstration succeeded, and that it is also dropping. NASA has announced no decision on Hubble since Wednesday.

What was announced

NASA's release, issued Wednesday, states the outcome directly: "the LINK spacecraft will not capture or boost an agency satellite to a higher altitude to extend its science mission as planned."

The problem was not in the part most readers would assume. LINK's ion thrusters — the engines meant to raise Swift's orbit — were not cited by NASA as the cause. Attitude control was. A spacecraft that cannot hold a steady orientation cannot execute a capture approach, and LINK's target was a satellite with no docking port, no grapple fixture and no ability to cooperate.

Swift remains where it was, without another announced boost option.

How it unravelled

LINK launched on July 3 aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL, air-dropped over Kwajalein Atoll. Early operations went well. NASA's Swift blog described commissioning as on track through mid-July, and by July 15 NASA said Katalyst had "quickly addressed early communications and attitude control issues seen during flight operations, including an issue with one of the spacecraft's three reaction wheels."

In late July the problem returned and did not resolve. SpacePolicyOnline reported that on July 28 Katalyst said LINK had been in a multi-axis spin for 72 hours. NASA's assessment at that point: "Preliminary investigation shows that two of Link's three reaction wheels currently are not operable, and there is some loss of functionality in its cold gas thruster system."

Katalyst used the ion thrusters — built for orbit raising, not attitude control — to help steady the spacecraft. It partly worked. NASA has said LINK was rotating at 9 degrees per second; Gunter's Space Page, a compiled reference rather than a primary telemetry source, records the rate falling to about 4 degrees per second and then 1.47 degrees per second by August 5. New flight software was uploaded on August 11.

Eight days later, NASA and Katalyst concluded it was not enough.

CNN reported that Katalyst regained control of the satellite but that the episode cost about a month of schedule, delaying the planned rendezvous — a delay that was not initially treated as fatal to the mission.

The risk was priced in from the start

NASA awarded the contract in September 2025. Ars Technica reported that the agency gave Katalyst less than a year to design and build the spacecraft, and the New York Times reported that the compressed schedule limited how much testing could be done to prepare for contingencies.

Katalyst's own engineers described the trade-off before launch. "We're in an unusual situation where the schedule dictates how much risk we're willing to accept, rather than the other way around," LINK principal investigator Kieran Wilson told Ars Technica in June.

"We knew this was a high-risk, high-reward mission — a first-of-its kind attempt, developed on an unprecedented timeline driven by the Sun's activity," said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, director of NASA's Astrophysics Division, in Wednesday's release.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman framed it the same way: "NASA should be willing to move quickly and take smart risks when the potential return is worth it, and that is exactly what we did with this mission. This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting."

Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee said the company "took on this high-risk, high-reward challenge and are proud of the milestones we reached along the way."

What has not been released is a root cause. Neither NASA nor Katalyst has published a finding explaining why two reaction wheels became inoperable within weeks of launch.

What LINK is still expected to do

NASA says LINK will attempt rendezvous and proximity operations with Swift. LINK is expected to attempt a close approach and gather data on operating near an object that was never built to be approached.

The approach phase — navigating to within grabbing distance of an uncooperative satellite — is the capability NASA and Katalyst have described as the demonstration's core objective. NASA says the two organisations will "gather as much data as possible to inform future satellite servicing operations."

Katalyst plans to keep operating LINK near Swift, according to the Associated Press.

Swift's last weeks

Swift's science instruments have been largely idle since February 11, 2026, when NASA suspended most operations so controllers could hold the spacecraft in an orientation that minimises atmospheric drag. The Burst Alert Telescope kept detecting gamma-ray bursts, but Swift stopped slewing to follow them with its other telescopes.

The New York Times reported that Swift will resume observations before reentry. NASA spokeswoman Alise Fisher told the paper: "Given the time required to return Swift to regular science operations, the mission would likely only be able to conduct observations for about a month prior to re-entry."

There is an altitude floor. Ars Technica reported that NASA engineers expected Swift to drop below 186 miles (300 km) around October, at which point drag would make it too low for Katalyst to safely approach. Reporting from the BBC in July, citing Lee, indicated the planned rescue window could close once Swift fell below roughly that altitude.

Swift's hardest capability to replace is speed — an instrument already in orbit that can swing onto a gamma-ray burst within minutes. NASA says it will rely on its remaining active observatories and "continue to prioritize finding new options to react rapidly to cosmic events."

Why did the mission end if the engines worked?
Because pointing matters as much as thrust. NASA cited attitude control, not propulsion. With two of three reaction wheels reported inoperable, LINK could not reliably hold the orientation a capture approach requires.

When will Swift come down?
NASA expects reentry later this year. The Associated Press reported it is not expected before October. No specific date or reentry zone has been published.

Could another spacecraft still boost Swift?
