iOS 27 Beta Mentions Multiple Batteries, Fueling Foldable iPhone Speculation

Developers examining Apple's fourth iOS 27 developer beta have identified software strings referring to multiple batteries in an iPhone, prompting renewed discussion about what the code may support. Apple has not commented on the discovery, and the beta software does not identify any unreleased hardware.

According to Macworld, the newly discovered strings include messages such as, "The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected," "The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded," and a notification stating that one of the batteries is not a genuine Apple component. The wording differs from battery-related messages currently used in iOS, where battery health is typically presented as a single system.

The software strings do not specify which device they are intended for. As a result, the references alone do not confirm the existence of a future iPhone model or any upcoming hardware.

AppleInsider reported that one possible explanation is software support for an iPhone equipped with more than one internal battery. Several foldable smartphones currently on the market use dual-battery systems to accommodate their hinged designs, although neither AppleInsider nor the beta code states that Apple's rumored foldable iPhone is the intended device.

AppleInsider also noted another possible interpretation. The battery-related strings could support situations involving an iPhone connected to an external battery accessory, allowing iOS to recognize and monitor more than one power source. Based on the available evidence, Apple has not indicated which explanation is correct.

Apple has previously used multiple battery cells inside an iPhone. A teardown of the iPhone X in 2017 revealed a dual-cell L-shaped battery configuration, although the device reported battery status as a single system to users.

Reports about a foldable iPhone have continued throughout 2026, with several analysts and supply-chain reports suggesting Apple is developing its first foldable smartphone. Those reports remain unconfirmed, and Apple has not announced such a product.

Apple's developer betas have previously contained references related to future features, internal testing and hardware compatibility. However, software discoveries do not always correspond to products that are eventually released.

The purpose of the newly discovered battery-related strings remains unclear, and Apple has not provided additional details. Future iOS 27 beta releases or official announcements may clarify what the software references are designed to support.
