Industry trade bodies cited an aging workforce alongside recruitment competition from artificial intelligence and software technology firms as contributing factors to the labor gap.
Trade association ADS reported that while the UK aerospace, defense, and security sector expanded by 31% over the past decade—contributing £46.8 billion ($62.4 billion) to the national economy last year—the organization noted that the supply of skilled engineers has not kept pace with overall industry expansion.
Workforce Demographics and Apprenticeship Shift
Data from a March report by the Royal Aeronautical Society cited by Reuters outlines demographic imbalances across the British aerospace sector:
Licensed Engineers Over Age 50: More than 50% of licensed aerospace engineers in Britain are currently older than 50.
Licensed Engineers Under Age 30: Fewer than 10% of licensed aerospace engineers in Britain are under 30 years old.
Kevin Craven, Chief Executive of ADS, told Reuters that the industry has experienced skilled labor shortages despite ten consecutive years of year-on-year sector growth.
According to industry experts cited in the report, many aerospace companies eliminated feeder apprenticeship programs several years ago as part of cost-saving measures. Experts noted that many firms subsequently shifted their primary hiring focus toward graduate recruitment schemes and entry-level roles.

Recruitment Competition From AI and Software Firms
The engineering shortfall occurs while commercial aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing and Airbus, manage record order backlogs. However, aerospace companies face intense competition for engineering talent from artificial intelligence firms and other software technology sectors, which experts say often offer higher starting salaries and lower barriers to entry.
Jerrold Lundquist, Managing Director at advisory firm The Lundquist Group, observed that engineering graduates frequently consider options outside traditional aerospace manufacturing.
"If you're an engineer coming out of Purdue or MIT or any other of the premier aerospace engineering programmes, you might say maybe I'll go to Anthropic or OpenAI as opposed to Boeing or Airbus," Lundquist told Reuters.
Industry Outreach and Sector Strategy
To lure potential recruits from Generation Z and Alpha, aerospace firms hosted engine-building exercises, interactive displays, and flight demonstrations at the Farnborough International Airshow. ADS Chief Executive Kevin Craven noted that innovations in sustainable aviation and electric flying taxis could help draw younger engineers into long-term careers.
Additionally, UK government investments in defense initiatives, tied to the war in Ukraine and projects such as BAE Systems' unmanned drone Brontanax, formed part of wider sector outreach efforts. Student participants at the event noted that broader education and awareness efforts outside airshows are necessary to inform students, particularly young women, about available career paths in the sector.
