Why Your Home Internet May Not Need a Wi-Fi 7 Router in 2026

Shop for a router in 2026 and the loudest pitch is Wi-Fi 7. The Wi-Fi Alliance launched the standard in early 2024. Compatible routers and phones are no longer rare. Broad adoption is still slow. That leaves a lot of households stuck on the same question: keep a working Wi-Fi 6 or 6E setup, or spend more for the new badge?

The good news is backward compatibility. An old printer will still join a Wi-Fi 7 network. The catch is that older gadgets cannot use the features that justify the upgrade  Multi-Link Operation, 320 MHz channels, denser 4K-QAM. Swapping the router alone will not make every device in the house five times faster overnight.

In an analysis published today, Engadget’s Antony Terence notes that terms like 4K-QAM and MLO sound like brochure filler until you map them onto a crowded home. Not every Wi-Fi 7 router ships the same toolkit. Cheap dual-band models may skip the 6 GHz band. Marketing often implies simultaneous multi-band radio use that current consumer boxes do not actually deliver. Before you buy, three comparisons matter: how the standard differs from earlier generations, what named labs measured, and which box matches your plan, your devices, and your country’s spectrum.

The ~46 Gbps Wi-Fi 7 figure is standard math (up to 16 spatial streams + 320 MHz + 4K-QAM). A phone or laptop with a 2×2 radio will not hit it. 320 MHz channels exist only on 6 GHz; 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz do not get that width. This newsroom did not independently time these links.

CNET’s 50-foot figure is combined-band lab throughput, not “the signal reached farther” as a vague claim. Brick, concrete, client radios, and channel width change the result. We have not repeated these tests.

Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it over 6?

A tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router is worth extra money when a household’s gadgets are already stepping on each other  several streams, downloads, classes, and games at once  and the clients can use 6 GHz or wide channels. The ~46 Gbps peak is aggregate radio capacity, not the speed of one laptop in the kitchen.

CNET’s lab did not merely say the signal “felt farther.” The 15 Wi-Fi 7 routers it tested averaged 515 Mbps at 50 feet across all three bands, against 383 Mbps for the Wi-Fi 6 routers in the same protocol. Combined three-band throughput was 3,169 Mbps for Wi-Fi 7 versus 1,309 Mbps for Wi-Fi 6E. CNET’s own advice matches the cheap-sticker warning: if a Wi-Fi 7 router says “dual-band,” keep shopping. Tri-band is the configuration that includes 6 GHz.

The standard’s headline feature is Multi-Link Operation. In the spec, that can mean using more than one band as a single connection. RTINGS, after reading beacon frames on 25 Wi-Fi 7 routers, says that is not what is shipping. Twenty-two units implemented only a minimal form of MLO. Three NETGEAR boxes marketed as “WiFi 7” were not even Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7. No consumer router in that set implemented true simultaneous multi-radio MLO. Several showed no measurable change when MLO was toggled, compared with 6 GHz alone. Buy the radios that are on the spec sheet   and treat “simultaneous MLO” on a product page as a claim, not a measurement.

A Wi-Fi 7 label is not Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7, and certified still does not mean true simultaneous MLO. That is RTINGS’ finding, not ours. We have not lab-tested these routers.

Older hardware is still cheaper. You no longer need a luxury budget for a competent U.S. Wi-Fi 7 box. The TP-Link Archer BE550 is often listed around $199.99 in the United States (B&H / Amazon listings cited in CNET’s 2026 coverage). In Bangladesh, Star Tech’s BE550 page showed Out Of Stock and Price: To be announced when checked on August 23, 2026; the same page’s FAQ still cited Tk 25,890. The dual-band Archer BE230 was Tk 11,590In Stock, regular price Tk 12,790  and it does not add a 6 GHz radio. Prices move. Those are one retailer’s tags, not a nationwide average.

Is Wi-Fi 6 still good in 2026?

Newest is not the same as necessary. If you are leaving Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), Wi-Fi 6 is still a real jump on 2.4 and 5 GHz: OFDMA and better multi-device behavior matter in a busy apartment even when 6 GHz is off. Wi-Fi 6E is that same generation plus 6 GHz. It is only a meaningful extra step where that third band is actually usable.

Client limits cut the other way. Apple lists Wi-Fi 7 on the iPhone 17 spec sheet. Coverage of FCC filings for Apple’s N1 chip says the radio is limited to 160 MHz, not the standard’s 320 MHz maximum. Apple’s public sheet does not state that cap. Treat the 160 MHz limit as reported, not as an Apple press-release number. Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro also lists Wi-Fi 7. We have not tested it. A few owners on Reddit said downloads did not jump much  that is anecdote, not a lab. For a console that never moves, Ethernet is still the surest path.

Engadget names new iPad Pro tablets and the Surface Laptop 8th Edition as the kind of clients that can use Wi-Fi 7 features; that is the source’s example, not a test we ran. IEEE 802.11bn  Wi-Fi 8 — is aimed at ratification around 2028. Whether waiting two years saves money is a forecast, not a fact.

The question most homes should ask first

In a Dhaka or Savar apartment  and in most city buildings anywhere  the bottleneck is often not the Wi-Fi generation. It is a 20, 50, or 100 Mbps plan, an ONU in one room, brick walls, and a dozen neighbor networks on the same channel. Wi-Fi 7’s 46 Gbps will not appear on a 50 Mbps line. A calmer 6 GHz hop can still help when 2.4 and 5 GHz are jammed  if that hop exists on your air. We have not confirmed it does in local homes.

Ask three questions before you pay. First: is your plan 500 Mbps or more, or actually multi-gig? Second: do you own phones and laptops that speak Wi-Fi 7, or at least 6E? Third: will this box transmit 6 GHz where you live, or is it a dual-band sticker? Miss two of those three, and an expensive 7 router is mostly a future-proofing receipt.
